Why Do the Dutch Wear Orange?

On Queen's Day it seems everything and everyone in Amsterdam is covered in the color orange. People don orange wigs, orange face paint, orange costumes from head to toe. But why is the sunny color associated with this Dutch national holiday and with the Dutch as a nation of people in general (the flag of the Netherlands is red, white and blue)?
