Although the biggest party of the year in Amsterdam -- Queen's Day -- isn't for another three months, today certainly marks a day fit for a queen; it's the 70th birthday of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. When she succeeded her mother, Queen Juliana, in 1980, she chose to keep "Queen's Day" on April 30, a date when Dutch weather is much more conducive to the many outdoor activities associated with the holiday.
Her Majesty intends to celebrate with her sister, Princess Margriet (who recently celebrated her 65th birthday), at Amsterdam's Theater Carré on Friday, February 1. To honor her birthday, Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant published 70 photographs Queen Beatrix on its front page today.
