Expats and locals celebrate Thanksgiving Day at the American Book Centers in Amsterdam and Den Haag
Double reason to party after US elections

Amsterdam, 27.11.2008

Thanksgiving Day is not celebrated in the Netherlands, but it means the world to lots of expats and immigrants from the United States, living in our country. The American Book Centers (ABC) in Amsterdam and Den Haag want to invite everybody to find out more about this tradition, which has about the same importance in the American culture as Sinterklaas has for us. To celebrate this special day, the ABC gives a special extra discount on Thanksgiving Day, November 27th. Also a typical Thanksgiving dinner will be organized for everybody who is curious to join this celebration.

About Thanksgiving

Regardless of religious belief or lack of any, Americans sit together once a year and count their blessings, in the timeless ritual of a harvest feast. They share a special meal centered around turkey. In America, this holiday is called Thanksgiving Day.

Says ABC owner Lynn Kaplanian Buller: “We the owners of this company are immigrants. We want to show our gratitude to the people who have made it possible for us to build a life here and to serve our new community with a daily buffet of books. Once a year we say “Thank You” to our customers and “Come Eat With Us” to those who want to share a Thanksgiving meal together, no matter the reason. Let us count this year’s extreme blessings and extreme challenges together on this date. With Obama as newly elected president of the United States we finally have reason to celebrate again ”.

Thanksgiving Discount and raffle

Thursday November 27th the ABC will celebrate Thanksgiving Day in both stores and in the ABC Treehouse. Registered customers will receive a gift mailed to their home. Everyone gets an EXTRA 10% off their purchases in ABC stores that day, so for Discount Card holders of all types ( Co -Op, Gold Card, Teachers) and for students and 65+’ers showing ID, that amounts to 20% Discount on this day. Further every buying customer will be invited to participate in a raffle where lots of books, calendars and ‘moleskins’ will be given away to the lucky winners.

Thanksgiving Dinner

The special Thanksgiving Dinner will be served in the ABC Treehouse on November 27th from 6PM-8PM. Lynn Kaplanian Buller: “We call it ‘supported potluck’ – our team provides the warm basic dishes
(Including a vegetarian choice) and each guest brings a salad or dessert to share with others. Together we build a huge buffet. We sit at long tables, friends and strangers cheek on jowl, the kids have a special play space right near the dining room. Everyone is welcome.”

The ABC provides the meal at cost:
Adults: € 20
Children under 12: € 5
