I usually go to the movies when it's cold, gray and/or rainy in Amsterdam. That is, unless it's a Friday night in late summer; then I hope for a mild temperatures and clear skies. Thanks to outdoor screenings on Amsterdam's idyllic Filmmuseum terrace (pictured), I get to enjoy a movie and a beautiful evening in the Vondelpark.

The organizers of "Sunsets," the annual Friday-night program of outdoor films at the Filmmuseum (July 31 - September 4), don't ignore the fact that English is almost common as Dutch in Amsterdam. There are plenty of native-English titles -- and even one American silent film from the 1920s.

Native-English Open-Air Film Screenings
  • Friday, July 31, 9:30 p.m.
    The General (silent)

  • Friday, August 14, 9:30 p.m.
    Juno

  • Friday, August 21, 9:15 p.m.
    Rear Window (Alfred Hitchcock classic)

  • Friday, August 28, 10 p.m.*
    Sita Sings the Blues
*Note: this film will be screened in the courtyard of the new Hermitage Museum as part of the Uitmarkt festival. As such, entrance is free.
Call +31 (0)20 589 1400 to make reservations up to one week before the show take advantage of this special Amsterdam tradition -- the admission price of € 3 even includes one beer!
