Leave it to Amsterdam to have a Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum. The city is famously attractive to cannabis users thanks to the Netherlands' liberal stance on the sale of marijuana and hash, and the result is evident from the dozens of cannabis coffeeshops that dot the city, in addition to other cannabis-oriented tourist attractions. Of the attractions on that list, however, the most educational (and the only child-friendly) one is the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum. The museum describes its content in a nutshell: "From cultivation to consumption, from ancient ritual to modern medicine, every aspect of cannabis in human culture is represented in some way."
The museum developed from the private collection of founder Ben Dronkers; it now contains artifacts he's collected or borrowed as well as informative multimedia exhibits. The museum explores all facets of cannabis use - cultural, industrial, nutritional and medicinal - for an eminently informative experience. The cultural uses of cannabis are traced from early human history to the present, from spiritual uses to recreational ones. Visitors are often surprised to find a modest collection of Old Masters, several of which feature rookhuizen, the Dutch coffeeshops of the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a Mondrian which depicts a spinster at work with hemp fiber.
Ample attention is paid to the myriad uses of the hemp plant which, in the form of hempseed oil or hemp fiber, can be called upon for countless purposes. The museum even has a sister company, HempFlax, that produces sustainable, natural hemp products, some of which can be found in the museum, and which illustrate the versatility of the hemp plant.
For those over 18, there's also an Interactive Vaporizing Exhibit, where visitors can experience the smokeless form of cannabis consumption; the cannabis is heated until the THC oil in the plant turns into vapor, and can then be inhaled.
