The Stedelijk Museum is the Netherlands' own MoMA or Centre Pompidou: a world-class museum of modern and contemporary art, located on the Museumplein, in Amsterdam's culturally rich Museum Quarter.

While the Stedelijk Museum has been under renovation 2006, it does have limited exhibitions as well as off-site events. While initial reports forecast that it would re-open at the end of 2009, the latest estimate is now 2012.

What's to See at the Stedelijk Museum:

All of the seminal modern art movements are represented at the Stedelijk – impressionist masterpieces from Matisse and Cézanne; Dutch Art Nouveau, or De Stijl, from Piet Mondrian and Gerrit Rietveld; and more. From Rodin's classic sculptures to Andy Warhol's iconic prints, the broad diversity of modern art is plumbed in the museum's permanent collection.

In 2010 and 2011, the museum was periodically opened, warts and all, for further temporary exhibits – and to offer a visitors a sneak peek into the beautifully renovated Paulus Potterstraat location. Since October 2011, however, the museum has closed to the public in order to complete the last phase of its renovation and expansion. In the meantime, art lovers can check out the third installment in the Temporary Stedelijk series, Stedelijk @, a collaborative effort between the Stedelijk Museum and other Amsterdam cultural institutions – such as the acclaimed De Appel Arts Center – to present a variety of multimedia events to the public.
