When I first heard of the Tassenmuseum, the Museum of Bags and Purses, I was certainly skeptical -- "Does the world really need an entire museum devoted to purses?" But the ostensibly narrow focus of the Tassenmuseum is actually a clever entry point into the fickle world of social tastes and everyday fashion over time -- and for this, the museum is able to pique the interest of those who, like me, don't even own a purse!

The Tassenmuseum is the only museum in Europe to boast such breadth, depth and sheer quantity in its permanent collection of 4,000 purses. As an added bonus, the museum is housed inside one of Amsterdam's classic, 17th-century canal-houses, with much of its historical interior intact.

What's to See at the Tassenmuseum:

The Tassenmuseum's permanent collection, passionately assembled by museum owner and curator Hendrikje Ivo, is the star of the show. From a Flemish bronze clasp that once adorned a 15th-century pouch to the multiplicity of styles that swept the 20th century, the collection is marvellously varied. From silver and iron to acacia wood, the purses come in materials from the ordinary to the unexpected, and each are firmly embedded in their historical milieu.

Ubiquitous modern names also find their place at the Tassenmuseum: virtually all of the iconic purses of the late 20th century are represented, via contributions from Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel and others. The museum shop, too, has its share of take-home wares, with an emphasis on contemporary Dutch brands.
