Look for the signs from Amsterdam to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel (or "Ouderkerk a/d Amstel"). A safe, convenient bike path follows the Amstel River all the way to the village.

Even older than Amsterdam, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is named for the 11th-century "Older Church" that once stood here, where Amsterdammers then had to worship because they had no church of their own. A terrible storm destroyed the original Ouderkerk in 1674; an 18th-century church (not pictured) stands in its place.

The church pictured here is a Protestant Reform church, built in 1920.
