Visitors who like to sip their drinks amid panoramic city views can add the SkyLounge, located in the DoubleTree by Hilton on Oosterdokseiland, to their list of options. Perched on the eleventh floor of the upscale hotel franchise, the SkyLounge's ample windows and expansive terrace allow superb views of the city from both inside and out. The outlook onto city monuments such as the Amsterdamse School-style Scheepvaarthuis (now the Grand Hotel Amrâth) the St. Nicholas Church, the Dam and other landmarks is well worth the markedly elevated, but not exorbitant drink prices. The bar's interior is rather sterile in stark contrast to the terrace, which is peppered with flashy touches such as illuminated, asymmetrical benches (and, of course, the splendor of the city beyond). The menu is fairly standard in its assortment of inventive cocktails, classic mixed drinks, beer, wine and spirits, plus non-alcoholic options such as coffee, tea and soft drinks, as well as the typicalbar snacks; the bartenders, however, can be decidedly above-par in their attention to detail. Nevertheless, even if there were just a crude lemonade stand up on the eleventh floor, the SkyLounge would be worth a trip for anyone who wants to look out onto the Amsterdam skyline from one of the most ideal observation points in the city center, one that's conveniently near to Amsterdam Central Station and attractions such as Science Center NEMO, the National Maritime Museum and ARCAM Architecture Center Amsterdam, and just a few minutes' walk from the city's historic core.
