Question: How Realistic Is It for a Tourist to See Amsterdam Safely by Bike?

This question came from a reader, whose exact words were:

How realistic is it for a tourist to hop on a bike and see Amsterdam? Is this something best left to experienced cyclists? For example, if you haven’t been on a bike in 20 years, is it folly to start pedaling around Amsterdam?

Answer: I'd love to say that every visitor could ride safely around Amsterdam, as seeing the city on two wheels is such a fun and unique experience. But the truth is, I wouldn't suggest it for everyone. I wouldn't say biking in Amsterdam is necessarily limited to experienced cyclists, but rather to those who read up on and prepare for it. I think two huge mistakes visitors make are not learning the rules of the road and not planning their routes before heading out into the streets.

My Top 10 Tips for Bike Safety in Amsterdam are meant to help people avoid making these mistakes. One option for timid riders is a guided tour (see my Where to Rent a Bike in Amsterdam for ideas). These pods of tourists on two wheels have safety in numbers.

For those who do end up renting a bike, be cautious but confident and you're sure to enjoy the ride!
