Why Aren't Sex and Drugs on My List of Top 5 Things to Do in Amsterdam?

By Shannon McAllister, About.com

Question: Why Aren't Sex and Drugs on My List of Top 5 Things to Do in Amsterdam?

The following question came from a reader, verbatim:

I was looking at the Top 5 Things to Do in Amsterdam, however, I did notice that smoking weed or indulging in adult activities was not on this list. Could you let me know why? I am a little baffled.

Answer: In short, because in my opinion there are hundreds of other things to do in Amsterdam that are much more representative of the city's rich culture and history. I also feel that there are plenty -- no, make that more than plenty -- of websites out there that specialize in these subjects. My goal as a guide to the city I live in is to concentrate on the many other attractions, events and aspects of Amsterdam that make it a unique destination for travelers. The legalization (though not necessarily the respective use and practice) of soft drugs and prostitution has a relatively short history and minimal importance in everyday local life here. I hope that sums it up.

That said, Peter Skelton of Amsterdam.info has a comprehensive page on the Dutch drug laws. And for a first-hand look at the history of prostitution in Amsterdam, check out the Prostitution Information Center (PIC) in the Red Light District.
