After visiting the Magere Brug, return to the west bank of the Amstel and continue heading south. Look back north from the bridge over Prinsengracht for more views of the Magere Brug. Cross Prinsengracht and turn right on the next street, Utrechtsedwarsstraat.
Utrechtsedwarsstraat
- The word dwars means "across." So this street is named Utrechtsedwarsstraat because it runs across the perpendicular main road Utrechtsestraat. Many Amsterdam street names follow this naming convention.
- This quiet, residential street is home to two lauded Amsterdam fine-dining restaurants. Utrechtsedwarstafel (tafel means "table") presents diners with a "Menu Matrix," from which they may choose three-, four- or five-course meals of French-inspired cooking paired with "very good" or "excellent" international wines.
Beddington's also offers three- and four-course prix fixe menus of dishes that meld European and exotic ingredients.
- If you're not in the mood for a white-tablecloth meal, eat with your hands at Axum, an authentic Ethiopian restaurant with a cozy, casual atmosphere.
- At typical Dutch bar De Huyschkaemer on the corner with Utrechtsestraat you can find a home-style Sloppy Joe, affordable beers and a great sidewalk terrace in summer.
Turn right at the corner with Utrechtsestraat (don't worry if you're tempted to pop into the countless cute shops; the end of this tour brings you back to this street). Turn left on the near (even) side of Prinsengracht.
