Tour Basics
  • Starting point: Begijnhof, near a square called Spui (pronounced "spow" like "cow"). Tram lines 1, 2 and 5 stop just in front of the square at Spui. Tram lines 4, 9, 14, 16, 24 and 25 also have a stop at Spui, but it's on farther east of the starting point (on the street called Rokin).

  • Duration: About two hours, depending on pace and optional stops to eat, shop or explore sights.

  • Keep in mind: Weather in Amsterdam changes often and quickly; bring an umbrella, a wind-proof jacket and a willingness to take shelter inside a cozy café if necessary. Comfortable walking shoes are a must on cobblestoned streets and sidewalks.

  • Watch for: Bikers! Before crossing intersections or hopping off the sidewalk for a better vantage point, look for bikers zipping by. It can be tempting to walk on the streets instead of the tiny sidewalks that line these narrow alleys and canals, but be sure to listen for bikers ringing their bells if you do!
