Where to Find Fun Kids' Clothes and Toys

By , About.com Guide

Whether you're looking for cool clothes or educational toys, these Amsterdam children's stores offer shopping fun for parents and little ones alike.

Staalstraat 26, Southern Old Centrum area

No matter what age you are, you're bound to walk out of De Beestenwinkel ("the animals store") with a smile on your face. Find colorful creatures great and small, from armadillos to zebras, in the form of cuddly stuffed animals, plush puppets and wooden toys, or emblazoned on backpacks and clothes.

HEMA

Several locations in Amsterdam (and throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany)

HEMA, an all-around shopping staple for most Amsterdammers, has one of the most appealing lines of children's clothes and toys I've ever seen. Patterns are simple, concepts are functional yet fun, selection isn't overwhelming and the prices are incredibly reasonable. A stop at the HEMA is a must for parents and children visiting Amsterdam.

Broer & Sus

Rozengracht 104, Western Canal Belt

A must for moms who want their kids to look fashionably fun, Broer & Zus ("brother and sister") features quality children's clothes for tiny tots to 10-year-olds, almost all of which are from top Dutch designers. You'll find everything from adorable pea coats you'll wish came in adult sizes to witty onesies reading "Lady Killer" and the like. The collection also includes the shop's own brand and a wide range of shoes and boots. Gift lines include the popular and precious Anne-Claire Petit products.

De Zaailing

Ruysdaelstraat 21, Oud Zuid (Old South) area

The store's name means "the seedling," which hints at its natural-products philosophy. Here you'll find beautifully handmade wooden and felt toys, baby clothes made of organic cotton and a huge selection of children's books (although most are in Dutch). They even sell all-natural bedding and fabric by the meter.

Het Kleine Warenhuis

Cornelis Anthoniszstraat 38, Oud Zuid (Old South) area

Just around the corner from De Zaailing, "the tiny department store" (the shop name's translation) sells kitschy kids' toys, clothes and room décor items, most of which come in bright colors and bold patterns. Original wall hangings look like play-time pop art and the handmade stuffed animals are a favorite unique gift (even if they do borrow the design of Anne-Claire Petit, whose products seem to have disappeared from the shelves).
